Medical Student Research Education
The Indiana Medical Student Program for Research and Scholarship (IMPRS) Summer Program, supported by both the Indiana CTSI and Indiana University School of Medicine, provides first year, Phase One medical students with a wide variety of mentored research and scholarly options to enrich their education and training to be the next generation of biomedical researchers.
For Mentors
Mentors are a vital part of IMPRS and the physician scientist workforce development mission. Without their guidance and expertise, our students cannot fully realize their potential.
Mentors are committed to collaborating closely with their mentees throughout the summer, providing project-specific training, ensuring rigor and reproducibility, and facilitating access to essential resources. Regular weekly meetings are essential, allowing mentors to review progress, offer feedback, and support the development of the final abstract for the IMPRS Research Symposium. This partnership fosters success, helping our students thrive in both their research endeavors and professional growth.
For Students
Students can expect to participate in the program for 8-10 weeks, between May and August. Exact schedules vary and students can usually expect to be engaged in mentored research and scholarly experiences for 40 hours/week during the summer program. In addition to mentored research, students will be expected to attend weekly seminars and present a poster at the end of the summer program. Students also can submit their Abstracts to the Proceedings of IMPRS.
Are you a medical student at the Indiana University School of Medicine who is interested in the IMPRS summer program? Application instructions, FAQs, and program details are available at the Medical Student Portal.

Support Our Future Scientists
Support the next generation of science professionals with a financial gift to the IMPRS Program fund. These gifts will be used to support travel expenses incurred for medical students to present at professional medical and research conferences.
