cigarette burning downSmoking Fast Facts:

  • About 32.4 million American adults still smoke cigarettes
Smoking remains the single largest preventable cause of death and illness in the world
  • Smoking causes an estimated 480,000 deaths every year, or about 1 in 5 death.
  • More than 16 million Americans live with a smoking-related disease

No matter your age or how long you have been smoking, quitting improves health both immediately and over the long term. That said, quitting smoking is not easy. It takes time and a plan. You don’t have to stop smoking in one day. Start with day one. You can begin with the American Cancer Society’s Great American Smokeout event on the third Thursday in November. You will be joining thousands of people from across the country to start your journey toward a smoke-free life. Alongside your peers and with the help of American Cancer Society resources, you can take the first step toward a healthier life and reducing your cancer risk.
