New AI Workshop Series from the Indiana CTSI will educate investigators and grow community around artificial intelligence

Beginning July 30, the Indiana CTSI will offer a series of monthly one-hour workshops on various topics related to artificial intelligence (AI). The AI Workshop Series will aim to make advanced AI applications accessible to investigators, staff, and community members, and explain its use in research, education and clinical care.

The series is hosted and organized by the Data Science & Informatics program at the Indiana CTSI, co-led by Titus Schleyer, DMD, MBA, PhD. The series will help participants learn about using AI in areas such as grant submissions, data management, recruitment, and qualitative research, as well as ground these practices in research ethics and more. Series organizers and presenters will come from a cross-section of stakeholders, including IU School of Medicine, IU Libraries, UITS and IU Health.

Schleyer said the series is a kind of “grand tour” of AI technology, which has made a significant impact on how we work. With AI technology developing at such a rapid pace, investigators have many questions about how to use it and what it can and cannot do, he said.

The AI Workshop Series is an attempt to answer some of those questions.

“Because AI touches everything, we wanted to get as many parts as possible of our community engaged in the series,” said Schleyer. “In the end, we see the purposes of these workshops not just as isolated learning opportunities but also as a means to grow a community around AI at the Indiana CTSI, its partner campuses, and the wider community.”

Each session will be presented in hybrid format. They will take place in the Regenstrief Institute Social Hub (1101 W 10th St, Indianapolis, IN), other venues to be announced, and online. In-person attendance will be capped at 100, but there is no limit for online attendance.

The first session is titled “An Introduction to the New ‘Generation’ of AI,” and will be led by Shaun Grannis, MD.

Schleyer said the series is open to everyone, not just those affiliated with the Indiana CTSI or IU.

“Being good at using AI is a competitive advantage, but so is knowing when not to use it,” Schleyer said. “That is true for all of us.”
