The Indiana University Medical Student Program for Research and Scholarship (IMPRS) has seen a 114% increase in research and scholarship opportunities since 2018 for medical students in the summer program. Over 200 students have been supported during this timeframe, according to Brittney-Shea Herbert, Ph.D., Assistant Dean for Physician Scientist Development.
“This increase is thanks to all the faculty, staff, and leaders at IU School of Medicine,” she said.
Herbert encouraged faculty members from all IU School of Medicine campuses to consider serving as mentors in this important program, get involved in the other programs and resources available to medical students interested in research. Prospective mentors are invited to sign up for these opportunities via RedCap.
Tamara Hannon, MD, MS, an IMPRS mentor, said she learns more from the students than they will ever know.
“The students are insightful, curious, creative people and working together reminds me of exactly why I chose this career,” said Hannon, who is a professor of pediatrics. They provide reassurance that the future of medicine is bright!”
