Project Type
Project Title Assessing Implementation of Delivering Community-based, Peer-led Interventions for Mental Health Problems among Youth in Eldoret, Kenya
Priority Area Access to healthcare
The Intervention We shall conduct a one-week training to peer-mentors on screening for common mental health problems using the SDQ, PHQ-9, GAD-7, and YTP and treating adolescents who screen positive using a 5 session Problem Solving Treatment (PST), an evidence-based treatment for common youth mental health problems. We will then select five of the peers to deliver the intervention under the supervision of the study team at the largest community-based youth drop-in center, Family Health Options Kenya (FHOK), in Eldoret, where the peers already provide mentorship to adolescents. We will use the REAIM Framework to assess the reach, effectiveness, adoption, implementation, and maintenance of this intervention.
Key Facilitators This project is being done in partnership with Family Health Options Kenya which runs the adolescent drop-in centre and peer mentor program in Eldoret, Kenya where the project is taking place.
Target Population The target population for this study are adolescents and youth in Eldoret Kenya for this initial implementation science evaluation. Based on this results from this implementation, our team plans to evaluate implemntation of a similar model in rural Indiana and North Carolina.
Process to Implementation The project is now being implemented in Eldoret, Kenya to assess facilitators and barriers to implementing this intervention in Western Kenya. Based on this data, we will aim to scale the intervention to other settings in Kenya and to assess implementation of the intervention at more settings in Kenya, Indiana, and North Carolina.
