Description:
Located within the School of Public Health – Bloomington, the NERC is a centralized resource to support multidisciplinary research in nutrition, exercise physiology, and related health sciences. By offering a comprehensive suite of services in a core setting, the NERC ensures consistency, quality control, and efficiency across studies, while reducing duplication of resources and costs for individual investigators. Bionutrition services include meal and beverage development, protocol consultation, and dietary intake assessment. Clinical services include anthropometry and body composition measurements (e.g., waist circumference, air displacement plethysmography, dual x-ray absorptiometry [DXA] scans), clinical phenotyping (phlebotomy, catheter placement, pregnancy and drug testing), and cardiometabolic assessments (blood glucose and lipids, blood pressure). Exercise Physiology services include graded exercise tests, muscle strength assessments, measurement of resting and total energy expenditure using calorimetry and access to an environmental chamber for controlled temperature and humidity conditions. Laboratory services include bomb calorimetry for energy content of food and biological specimens, specimen processing, advanced analytical techniques and well monitored and maintained freezer storage.
