The Indiana University Transgenic and Animal Core (IUTAC) is an IUMC- and CTSI-designated core facility providing high-quality, cost-effective services to Indiana University and external research communities. The core supports the generation, preservation, restoration, and long-term stewardship of genetically modified animal models using advanced genome editing, transgenic, assisted reproductive, and cryopreservation technologies. IUTAC is fully equipped for mouse model production, including two microinjection systems and a NAPA21 electroporation system.
Established in 1990, IUTAC has generated over 500 genetically engineered mouse models, recovered more than 300 mouse strains, and maintains approximately 500 cryopreserved sperm strains in its liquid nitrogen repository. The core can generate and rederive 30–40 mouse models annually, depending on project complexity, and cryopreserve hundreds of strains.
Services include: (1) animal model development via pronuclear injection and electroporation (starting below $3,000); (2) in vitro fertilization (IVF) and strain restoration; (3) sperm and embryo cryopreservation; (4) sperm cryopreservation with verification; and (5) long-term cryogenic storage. IUTAC is also expanding to support additional model organisms, including zebrafish.
