Translational Research Development Program
The Indiana CTSI Project Development Teams (PDTs) provide investigators access to experts who can help implement high-quality pilot projects that generate successful external grant submissions.
General Information
The overall mission of the PDTs is to “Increase the translation of health sciences research and health care delivery to the people of Indiana and beyond by facilitating an environment that enables the conduct of clinical and translational research.”
Committees consist of multidisciplinary researchers who assist investigators in developing ideas/hypotheses into well-designed translational research projects. The teams serve as “one stop shops” by providing investigators access to protocol development; pilot funding; biostatistics; IRB/regulatory and nursing support; facilitation of collaboration with other investigators and access to Core Resources on the IU, IUI, Purdue and Notre Dame campuses, all in one meeting. Pilot awards are typically up to $15,000 for two years.
Eligibility Requirements
The PDT mechanism is for faculty within the Indiana CTSI consortium, including Indiana University, Purdue University, and the University of Notre Dame. Note: Post-doctoral and clinical fellows can utilize this mechanism for project advice, but not for pilot funding.

Commercialization PDTs
- MedTech Commercialization: Supports the advancement of innovative medical devices and software ideas through early phase development toward commercialization and clinical use. Please click here for more information or contact Program Manager Kara Garcia (karagarc@iu.edu)
- Drug Development to Commercialization: Supports academic and clinical investigators through the complex journey of bringing novel therapeutics and diagnostics from discovery to commercialization. Please click here for more information or contact Program Manager Padma Portonovo (pportono@iu.edu).
Application Guidelines
The skills and knowledge required for successful commercialization of new technologies (intellectual property protection, SBIR/STTR funding, and startup creation) are very different than those for traditional academic research (scientific publication and R01-style grant funding). The Commercialization PDTs are designed to provide early guidance to academic and clinical investigators interested in advancing their discoveries to the market. If you are seeking advice or support related to commercialization of your innovation, please use the link below. If you are seeking advice or support related to traditional academic research, please use the Research PDT application described in the next section.
Research PDTs
- Community, Healthcare Delivery, & Implementation Science: Supports translational research relating to how to improve health outcomes and promote sustainability in communities, including behavioral science, clinical interventions and access to patients, families, and communities. Strengths include epidemiology, sociology, implementation science, and communications
- Concepts to Clinic: Supports a wide range of research projects, including those on the path from basic science and/or animal models to all phases of clinical trials.
- Human Health & Biomedical Technology: Supports biomedical research innovations related to human health therapeutics and diagnostics by leveraging the major expertise at Purdue University. Strengths include biomedical technologies, nutritional health, analytical chemistry, regulatory issues and intellectual property concerns.
- Pediatric Sciences: Supports multidisciplinary clinical and translational research projects in pediatric populations.
- Social, Behavioral, and Brain Health: Supports basic and translational health research, from model systems to individual and interpersonal behavior, to policy and population dynamics. Strengths will be in mental health, aging, cognition, neuroscience, and social and behavioral science methodologies, including survey research, evaluation, social networks, big data, and qualitative research. Provides a special emphasis on grant writing for the social and behavioral sciences.
- Structural & Social Determinants of Health: Supports basic, clinical and translational research that 1) enables a deeper understanding of how social, economic, and environmental contexts shape patterns of health and wellness, including onset of diseases and disorders, within communities; and 2) informs effective treatments and interventions to promote equitable opportunities for good health and wellbeing.
Application Guidelines
The application process is contingent on the stage of the project:
- (Approach 1) New or early idea; concept development and validation
- (Approach 2) Project development; seeking first grant submission and additional resources, e.g. pilot funding, collaborators, regulatory support, statistical support;
- (Approach 3) Project needs revision after first round grant submission and possible resources for a resubmission
Please select the appropriate approach below to submit your application.
