The Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute’s (CTSI) Community Health Partnerships (CHeP) program is accepting applications until June 1, 2023, for its Trailblazer Award, one of two grant awards offered by CHeP that support community-based research to improve health and health equity in Indiana.
Ephrem Abebe, MS, PhD, assistant professor of pharmacy practice at Purdue University, received two grants from the program—a Trailblazer Planning Grant award (2019-2020 project period) and the Trailblazer Award (2020-2022 project period). As a result of the grant support, Abebe and his partners were able to present two conference abstracts at the American Pharmacists Association 2022 Annual meeting in San Antonio, Texas. The funding has also resulted in the submission of a provisionally accepted manuscript—pending minor revision—to a peer-reviewed journal.
When asked what the CHeP Trailblazer funding had allowed his team to accomplish, Abebe said it helped them “establish a partnership from scratch between Purdue University’s College of Pharmacy and Indiana Family to Family, a nonprofit organization, to conduct research to identify unmet medication needs among children and youth with additional health care and educational needs, as well as to learn from one another to better understand organizational needs, priorities and constraints.”
Abebe said that utilizing these funding mechanisms enabled the team to submit a successful application to PCORI.
“The Trailblazer awards are an excellent opportunity to build partnerships with researchers to create evidence-based programs that improve services for those that the community partner serves, as well as being a wonderful opportunity for partners to learn from each other,” he said.
The deadline to submit applications for the Trailblazer and Planning Grant Awards is June 1, 2023. To learn more or to apply, visit the CHeP website.
