This case series of pregnant women in NYC hospitals found that among pregnant women with COVID-19, 86% possessed mild disease, 9% exhibited severe disease, and 5% developed critical disease – much like everyone else.
New York is clearly an epicenter for COVID-19 in the United States, with almost 85,000 cases by early April. This report details a series of confirmed COVID-19 cases in pregnant women presenting to two New York City hospitals. Fourteen (33%) of them had no symptoms, and were identified only after later developing symptoms while hospitalized or after they began universal testing for all obstetrical admissions.
Of these 14 initially asymptomatic women, 71% developed symptoms during their delivery admission or soon after postpartum discharge. Of the other 29, three women required antenatal admission for COVID symptoms, and one other required oxygen supplementation six days after delivering. No confirmed cases of COVID-19 were detected in neonates on the first day of life.
