This large case series provides characteristics and early outcomes of hospitalized patients with COVID-19 in the NYC area.

Researchers described the clinical characteristics and outcomes of 5700 patients with COVID-19 admitted to 12 hospitals in the NYC area. All were positive by PCR testing. The average age was 63 years and 40% were female.

The most common comorbidities were hypertension (57%), obesity (42%), and diabetes (34%). At triage, 31% had a fever, 17% had a respiratory rate above 24 breaths/minute, and 28% received oxygen.

During hospitalization, 14% were treated in the ICU, 12% received ventilation, 3% had kidney replacement therapy, 21% died. Mortality for those requiring mechanical ventilation was 88%.
