The American Diabetes Association states that Diabetes is growing at an “epidemic rate” in the United States. According to the 2018 data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an estimated 34.2 million Americans have diabetes. Of this 34.2 million, 26.8 million are diagnosed and 7.3 are undiagnosed and do not realize they are living with diabetes.
The state of Indiana’s landscape is equally alarming. Approximately 738,000 children and adults suffer from all forms of diabetes, including type 1, type 2, and gestational. It is estimated that of these 738,000, 160,000 have diabetes but do not know it. In addition, at least 1.7 million Hoosiers are living with prediabetes, leaving them at risk for type 2 diabetes in the future.
