November is National Diabetes Month! In Indiana alone, about 12.3% of the adult population has already been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, that’s about one in every eight adults. There are another 146,000 adults who have diabetes but don’t know it yet, and about 1.7 million adults who have prediabetes. Prediabetes is when your blood levels are higher than normal, but not high enough to be fully diabetic. Even though all of this sounds pretty scary, and you may not even know exactly what diabetes is, there are resources to help with every step of the way.
The American Diabetes Association (ADA) has a lot of information available to everyone and the website is easy to navigate. They break it down into Type 1, Type 2 and gestational diabetes so you can get the information that applies to you. Want to know your risk for type 2 diabetes? You can take a quick 60-second quiz, available in English and Spanish, to see where you stand! Once you start your journey and learn the basics, there are even more tools to help you manage your diabetes. Need some easy tips for lifestyle changes? Want to do a virtual cooking class and get tasty, healthy recipes? The ADA website can help with those too!
The Cardiovascular and Diabetes Coalition of Indiana (CADI) has resources to help you understand diabetes too, click here for more information!
